Hollender Room

This is a small library-conference room which was one of the building’s best kept secrets for most of its history prior to the restoration project. There was no period motif in this room, so one had to be created by Fine Art Decorating.

The result is a special room that is uniquely American —but "American" in the broadest sense, for the color scheme of the vaulted ceiling borrows heavily from Mayan and Inca themes, resulting in a brilliant presentation.

Lining the side walls are leaded glass bookcases containing some of the rare books from the main library. At the far end, framed in the large exterior window, is the famous statue of George Washington by Brother Bryant Baker, copies of which are located in major cities of the United States. Our first President is shown dressed as Master of Alexandria Lodge No. 39, Virginia. The statue is lighted at night, and makes a striking picture when viewed from the alcove entranceway.

The conference table, designed by Ethan Gerard, AlA, was handcrafted of North American Cheny with an inlaid marble surface. It adds functional utility, as well as beauty, to this unique room.
